I was just thinking about living green, and I wondered what people’s main reasons for joining/using Rehash are. Clearly there’s a strong component of the site that promotes living green. I think a lot of us get very caught up in the trading, the mailing, the getting new stuff, but I think sometimes we forget how much of a difference we are making here.

Many people I know think nothing of just throwing out bags of clothes or perfectly good stuff in the garbage. Landfills are overflowing with so many things that are still usable or recyclable. And honestly, there was probably a time that I did that too… throwing away stuff (not so much clothes). It’s so true though… one person’s trash is truly another person’s treasure, and that’s something that I love about this site, and other sites like this (Freecycle anyone?).

So what things are you doing in your life to live a little greener, besides Rehash?

(1) I list a lot of stuff on Freecycle when I can, or take things from others who are trying to get rid of stuff. Even if I can’t use it, I can re-home it.
(2) I use a menstrual cup religiously, and sometimes cloth pads. I haven’t used disposable/paper products for my cycle in about 6-8 months now.
(3) Compact Fluorescent bulbs
(4) Recycling curbside (though admittedly, I could be recycling more that I do).
(5) I am gradually switching over to all natural cleaning methods. Think: baking soda, vinegar, Dr. Bronner’s, essential oils, etc. Many of the mainstream brands that boast “natural” and “green” aren’t really everything they seem!
(6) I’ve been using strictly reusable grocery bags, and not just at the grocery store. I have bags that fold up to the size of a tennis ball, and I have 1 or 2 in my purse at all times.
(7) WALKING when things are close enough to walk to. Or using public transportation.
(8) Re-Using packaging materials. If you knew how often I re-used envelopes, mailers, and boxes—you’d laugh. Actually, never mind. A lot of you probably wouldn’t... I notice a lot of you do the same!

I’d say many, if not all of the people I know (especially family members…Argh) still just toss things (like a perfectly good divided make-up holder for bathroom counter/vanity, just because they didn’t want to clean it). Sometimes it gets on my nerves a bit. I would like to implement everything you listed in the near future. I do some of them, but am far from perfect. I curbside recycle everything I can. I don’t think there is a way I can force any one else I know to do the same though. Things still get tossed into their garbage cans because they don’t feel like walking to the recycling bins. I’ve been wanting to get some Dr. B’s for cleaning, etc. for quite a while now, but haven’t picked it up yet. Number 7 would actually be the hardest for me to implement around here. There are very few places super close to me (couple of schools, small park or two, and trees). Also, the closest bus stop would probably take me at least an 1 hr to walk to…maybe if I was walking super fast, lol. I could probably use the exercise as of late though (been slacking a little). As for the boxes, mailers, etc….I’ve pretty much always done this, as much as possible, when I can. I’ve also been known to hoard empty skincare bottles/jars in case I might need them for something else too, lol! I still have a long, long way to go as far as living green is concerned, but hopefully I’ll get there. Great post, btw!

I rehash for many of the obvious reasons… but here is one more… it’s a extension of “Pay it Forward”. I regularly give stuff away that I don’t need/use anymore. It makes me feel good to give and rehash allows me to give to a whole new world of people. If shipping were free, I wouldn’t ask for anything in return. On several occasions I have offered to just let people pay for shipping (see my Duran Duran collection). In fact, I have a deadline of June 20th to clear out my rehash collection so we can have a guest. So, all you watchers out there may get a surprise package if I have your address…
